Wow. Ovechkin and Backstrom aren't a bad basket to have all one's eggs in, but you sure would like a little more flexibility in the future. However, I personally would be far more comfortable with a long-longterm deal for Backstrom than I am with Ovie's.

Just got off the phone with Green. He said GMGM was refusing to provide brownies for Nick until Mike explained "George, they're not the same kind I make with that special ingredient". Nor was he referring to junior girl scouts.

So this will happen.

I hope Backie does a longer term deal but I def understand why the agent wants to do 5 years and bring him right into UFA. The more contracts the agent does the better it is for him. Esp. because after a 5 year deal Backie would then be able to negociate a long term deal.

Instead of doing a 10ish year deal then hoping to get another longer deal later in his career.

If we grabbed a copy of the Mike Richards deal, and added half a million dollar cap hit ($6M overall), I think that would be ideal both in terms of length of contract and overall cap hit, and might be enough money to satisfy Backstrom and his agent.

That's the sort of deal I'm hoping to hear about, anyway.

Me too, though I think adding closer to a whole million more per is what it will take.

(I am remembering the Richards deal at 12/69)

If Backstrom doesn't get at least the same money as Kane and Toews, he should fire his agent. They are comparable players, and Backstrom has the best numbers of the three. Probably not the ideal bottom line for the Caps, but really, there's not much of a case against that from Backstrom's camp. So, probably at least $6.5 million for 5 years.

Get backis signed IMMEDIATELY and for a long long long time. He is to the caps what joe sakic was to the avalanche.

I'd buy his agent a lot of drinks if he got fired then :)

I've wished for Backstrom to be locked up for a long term deal for a while. This season he just keeps progressing and impressing. I think he's the glue that holds this team together. Definitely the most underrated or overlooked player on this team. I don't think anyone objects to seeing #8 and #19 staying together for many years to come.

Let's hope they get this done!

The CBA needs to fixed so that only a percentage of a players salary counts against the cap if that player was drafted by the team. It sucks that teams that draft well and have loads of young talent won't be able to keep them because of the salary cap. Teams that develop their own players should be rewarded not punished.

Second and third that. Get it done, GMGM. These guys together are poetry in motion.

This needs to happen.

Every game that goes by it feels like his value goes up even further.

GMGM should order BB not to play him, so he can't score any more goals or get any more assists - that way, his value doesn't go up and we can afford to keep him!!

I've often thought that too. Why should we be a feeder team for other more poorly run teams?

Sure hope we can lock up Backstrom long term. Backie and Ovie have that special kind of chemistry.

I still think we should have drafted phil kessel. Backstrom is still not ready to be a 2nd line center in this league

14 years, $86 million... offer him that GMGM.

I really hope we can sign him for an extended time for something in the 6.5 range. He might well be an $8 million/year player if he's a UFA at 27 years old. Would be hard to afford that.

Genius!

Seriously, though, I hope they lock him in soon - this would be a very different team without him.

Backstrom will flourish having a veteran fellow Swede like Nylander to mentor him.
